VISA

If you plan on making a short-term visit (up to 90 days) to the Faroe Islands, you must have a visa that is valid for entry into the Faroe Islands, if you come from a country with a visa requirement. 

A visa to enter Denmark or another Schengen country is not valid for entry into the Faroe Islands. The Faroe Islands is not a member of the EU and not a part to the Schengen Agreement.

If you need a visa to enter the Faroe Islands, you will most likely also need a Schengen visa, since most travel to these two countries goes through a Schengen country, such as Denmark. 

Citizens from visa free countries do not need a visa.

Citizens of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden are free to enter, reside, study and work on the Faroe Islands. 
 

CONDITIONS AND APPLICATION

In general, if you qualify for a Danish visa, you also qualify for a visa to enter the Faroe Islands. The application procedure for visas to enter the Faroe Islands is the same as for a Danish visa. Visas to enter the Faroe Islands are issued by Danish diplomatic missions abroad or the Danish Immigration Service. 

IMPORTANT EXCEPTIONS

• A Danish/Schengen visa does not give permission to enter the Faroe Islands.
• Residence permits, residence cards and D visas, whether issued by Denmark or another Schengen country, do not give permission to enter the Faroe Islands.
• An ID card issued by an EU or Schengen country that is valid for entry into Denmark does not give permission to enter the Faroe Islands. Such individuals will require a passport to travel to the Faroe Islands.
• Individuals with a visa valid only for entry to the Faroe Islands are not required to possess travellers’ health insurance.
   

HOLDERS OF DANISH RESIDENCE PERMITS WHO REQUIRE A VISA TO ENTER THE FAROE ISLANDS

If you hold a Danish residence permit, but require a visa to enter the Faroe Islands, the Immigration Service or the police can issue an entry permit. 
 

IF YOU ENTERED DENMARK ON A VISA OR RESIDENCE PERMIT ISSUED BY ANOTHER SCHENGEN COUNTRY

You must apply for a visa to enter the Faroe Islands before you arrive in Denmark. In certain cases, the Immigration Service or the police can issue a permit if you are already in Denmark.

In such cases, you must declare the purpose of your visit to the Faroe Islands, possess a ticket or other documentation for the planned trip  and state why you did not apply for a visa before entering Denmark. 
 

HOLDERS OF RESIDENCE PERMITS VALID FOR THE FAROE ISLANDS  WHO NEED A VISA TO TRAVEL TO DENMARK

If you hold a residence permit valid for the Faroe Islands , you will need a visa to enter Denmark. Such individuals do not need supplementary travellers’ insurance in order to enter Denmark.

Such individuals must also have a visa if they wish to travel to another Schengen country.

An application for a visa to enter Denmark or a Schengen country must be submitted to the police on the Faroe Islands, who will then send it to the Immigration Service. 
 

EXTENSION

In certain cases, a visa giving you permission to enter the Faroe Islands can be extended beyond the 90-day validity period. Extensions can be granted to, among others, individuals visiting a spouse, partner, fiancé(e), boyfriend, girlfriend, child, parents or siblings, or in the event of serious illness. An application to extend your visa must be submitted to the police on the Faroe Islands, who will then send it to the Immigration Service.
